Spirit of Aloha: Polynesian Pop

  • Norman Firehouse Art Center 444 South Flood Avenue Norman, OK, 73069 United States (map)

On display from May 11 - July 31, 2023, Spirit of Aloha: Polynesian Pop explores the popularization of tiki culture through numerous private collections and local Normanite Kyle Lankford’s collection of South Seas artifacts, Polynesian Pop ephemera, and contemporary Hawaiian carvings, ceramic tiki mugs, and other art.

Tiki culture is defined by the post-World War II era’s obsession with South Sea islands. At its core, tiki culture is a tropical fantasy, drawing on Polynesian elements and escapism. The Spirit of Aloha: Polynesian Pop exhibition will include works by artists of Hawaii, including master carver Mike “Gecko” Souriolle from Oahu and carver Bill Collins from Kauai, as well as other well-known tiki artists. Renowned Tiki author and curator Sven Kirsten, will be visiting the Firehouse Art Center to speak about Tiki style's relation to mid-century modernism and artistic connections to Oklahoma. The Norman Firehouse Art Center is excited to celebrate artists of Hawaii this summer through multiple art forms, cultural experiences, and programing
